How has chiropractic care affected your life?
Relieving Patients of Pain One Back At a Time
No one deserves to live with back pain, but unfortunately that is the reality for many people. Chronic pain that affects the back can be distracting and even debilitating. Fortunately, many of the most common causes of back-related pain are treatable with chiropractic treatment. Four causes of back pain include:
• Herniated disc - A herniated disc is a condition that occurs when compressed vertebrae place too much pressure on the discs in the spine. The result is chronic dull or sharp pains that affect the lower back and upper back, and may cause a condition known as sciatica.
• Poor posture - Poor posture can begin at a young age and can continue into adulthood, causing abnormal curvature of the spine. The result is abnormal displacement of pressure throughout the back, which results in chronic or intermittent pain.
• Personal injury - A personal injury occurs when an accident or activity causes injury to the joints, muscles, bones or other components of the musculoskeletal system. Personal injuries are most common following car accidents and workplace accidents, or while participating in a sport or athletic activity.
• Excessive weight - Carrying extra weight can contribute to chronic musculoskeletal pain. The spine, joints and muscles are designed to frame the body and facilitate movement under normal weight ranges. However, carrying an extra pounds can place excessive strain on the body and contribute to chronic pain
Natural Healing Techniques Through Chiropractic Care
Fortunately, chiropractic care can provide assistance for each of these conditions. If, for example, you've suffered a personal injury or a disc herniation that has caused pain or sciatica, spinal adjustments and back exercises can encourage the vertebrae and discs in the upper and lower back to return to a more natural position - releasing pressure on the nerve pathways that surround the spine. The healing process may not take place immediately, but most patients begin to feel relief from pain after just a few treatment sessions
What's typically the source of your back pain?
Caring for Your Spine with Back Exercises
If you suffer from chronic back pain, you may feel as though there are few options for managing your discomfort. Instead of using pain medications to simply cover up your symptoms, you may benefit from a combination of chiropractic care and back exercises that are designed to address your symptoms, as well as the underlying conditions that are causing them.
If you are suffering from spinal alignment problems, a herniated disc or a muscle injury, using back exercises in between your chiropractic visits may accelerate the rehabilitation process. For example, if you are suffering from a lower back injury, squats use multiple joints in the lower back, hips and legs that can help you make a faster recovery. On the other hand, exercises that strengthen the trapezius muscles, such as shoulder shrugs, can tighten and elevate the upper back, which can aid with posture correction.
Exercises Can Be Beneficial for Pain Management and Wellness
In addition to using back exercise for rehabilitative purposes, it is also beneficial to overall wellness and spinal health. When performed correctly, certain exercises, such as back extensions, dead lifts and pull-ups are beneficial for strengthening the upper and lower back muscles. A strong back means less strain when lifting or performing routine activities that are common causes of back injury.
Here at Kilian Chiropractic, our chiropractor, Dr. Trevor Kilian, uses traditional chiropractic care, as well as exercises to help patients recover from existing injuries, as well as gain strength and resistance against future injuries. Our combination of natural, non-invasive therapies is designed to address back pain, and also help the body heal and protect itself. We believe that improving your spinal health will not only help you feel better, but that it can also help you lead a healthier, pain and symptom-free life.
What back exercises do you recommend for strengthening?
Strong Spines and Achieving Optimal Wellness Helped with Completion of Vancouver's Half Iron Man
Yesterday, our Vancouver chiropractor, Dr. Killian, and his wife, Lauren completed a Half Iron Man as part of Saunders Subaru Victoria Triathlon! Dr. Kilian finished with a race time of 4:53 and Lauren finished at 5:23. While plenty of long distance running, swimming and cycling are part of the training process, did you know that core exercises for spinal strength are just as important?
Our spine is the foundation of a healthy body. When our spine is injured or out of alignment, we are at increased risk for injury, illness and fatigue. Whether you’re training for a marathon or recovering from an injury, building a strong spine is the first step towards achieving your wellness goals.
Build a Strong Spine with Back Exercises & Postural Correction
#1: Perform spine strengthening back exercises each day. Strengthening the muscles that hold your spine straight and upright is essential to building proper posture. When we spend our days hunched over a computer screen or steering wheel, our spine becomes compressed. Pilates and yoga exercises help create new space in our spine, which is essential for proper alignment. Be sure to check out our “Member Wellness” video exercise library for step-by-step core exercise instructions.
#2: Practice proper posture. Sitting for eight hours a day, five days a week slumped at a desk is a recipe for poor posture. Proper ergonomics helps protect your spine from injury. For an added core workout, swap your office chair for an exercise ball. You don’t have to sit on the ball all day, but an hour in the afternoon is a great way to reenergize your muscles and wake up your body.
#3: Lift with your legs, not with your back. Improperly lifting heavy objects can lead to injury and result in back pain. Repeated muscle strain over time can lead to serious health problems, such as a herniated disc.
Dr. Killian recommends regular chiropractic care to help maintain proper alignment. These adjustments can also help reduce the risk for future injuries and chronic pain.
