Proper Workplace Ergonomics

If you sit at a desk all day at work, it is essential that you take the proper precautions. Even though you are sitting down all day, do you find that you are sore when you get home from work? If so, it is likely that you aren’t using proper workplace ergonomics. The way you sit and the way your workstation is set up are essential in leaving work at the end of the day pain-free. The next time you go into work, there are a few tips that you should follow.

Adjust Your Chair Properly

You want to adjust your chair so that your feet rest flat on the floor. You also want your knees to be at the same level as your hips. If you are short and your feet don’t touch the ground, you should use a footrest. If you are sitting in an inexpensive chair all day that provides no lumbar support, you should put a cushion at the curve of your back to give you the necessary support.

Focus On Your Posture

Your posture is essential in avoiding pain at the end of the day. Your body should be centered in front of your computer, and you should avoid slouching.

Setting Up Your Workstation

When setting up your workstation, you should keep all of the items that you regularly use such as your phone and your stapler close. Stretching to reach these items, again and again, can result in pain at the end of the day.

Wrist Positioning

When you are typing, you should keep your wrist in a straight position. This will minimize stress, reducing your risk carpal tunnel syndrome. If you are having trouble keeping your wrist straight, you should use a wrist rest while you type.

Talking On the Phone

If you talk on the phone often or if you need to type or look for files while you are on the phone, cradling it between your neck and your shoulder often can result in a pain issue. If you spend a large portion of your day on the phone, you should consider getting a headset.

Get Up and Stretch

It is a good idea to get up and stretch every few hours while working. Sitting for long periods of time can put excess pressure on your spine, resulting in neck and back pain.

If you are not following proper work ergonomics, it can cause problems that could result in chronic pain. Fortunately, Killian Chiropractic can help.
