What Is Scoliosis?
Scoliosis is a disease that causes the spine to curve to the side. The angle of the curve varies, but a curve that is more than 10 degrees is regarded as scoliosis. Typically, the lateral curvature of the spine in a person with scoliosis resembles the letter "S" or the letter "C." Individuals with scoliosis may have uneven shoulders or hips, protruding ribs, and lean to the side.
What Causes Scoliosis?
Around 80 percent of scoliosis cases are idiopathic. The remaining 20 percent of cases with identifiable causes are broken up into two categories: structural and nonstructural. With structural scoliosis, the curve of the spine is stiff and cannot be undone. With nonstructural scoliosis, the spine is curved but works fine.
Main causes of scoliosis include infections, cerebral palsy, genetic conditions such as Down syndrome and Marfan syndrome, tumors, birth defects, and muscular dystrophy.
What Are the Symptoms of Scoliosis?
Symptoms of scoliosis vary slightly between children and adults. Symptoms of scoliosis in children include pushed out ribs, uneven shoulders, both sides of the back being uneven when bent over, the head not centered with rest of the body, arms not hanging down straight, and one hip higher than the other.
Symptoms of scoliosis in adults are a bump in the lower back, having a hard time walking, uneven hips or shoulders, height loss, weakness, pain or numbness in legs, bone spurs in the spine, feeling tired, and having a hard time standing up straight.
Scoliosis Pain Management Techniques
We use several types of chiropractic care to relieve the painful symptoms of scoliosis. We can use a combination of chiropractic adjustments, corrective exercises, non-surgical spinal decompression, and acupuncture to help relieve back pain and other symptoms.
Chiropractic adjustments can help realign the spine with the neck, relieving soft tissue from pressure and pain. Non-surgical spinal decompression gently stretches the back, helping to ease back pain and other symptoms. Another method of chiropractic care we use is acupuncture.
